Khareef salt air leaves a wet, salty film on the condenser coils of Salalah hotels, cold stores and port buildings, and an acid-based aluminium cleaner removes that film along with the oxide underneath. If you are buying aluminium coil cleaner in Oman for a Dhofar site, the short answer is this: use an acid brightener on the bare aluminium fins of outdoor condensers, diluted with 5 to 50 parts of water. Rinse with plenty of fresh water, and clean the coils before and after the June to September monsoon. We stock our Aluminium Cleaner RXSOL-16-1028-025 for this work and deliver to Salalah from our Barka warehouse.

What khareef salt air does to AC coils in Salalah

From June to September the monsoon brings drizzle, mist and sea air over Salalah, Raysut and the coastal plain. Salt residue settles on condenser coils and holds moisture against the metal. Over time this leads to fin crumbling and coil corrosion that can end in refrigerant leaks.

Look for white or green residue on copper or aluminium, flaking fins and oil staining. Corrosion often starts on the fins facing the prevailing onshore wind, so check the sea-facing side of rooftop units first. Galvanic corrosion develops faster where dissimilar metals meet in salt-heavy air, and bare aluminium or copper corrodes much faster once a factory coating breaks down.

What an aluminium coil cleaner does

Coil cleaners for air-cooled condensers are commonly acid-based foaming cleaners and brighteners. The foam, helped by surfactants, lifts insects, lint, dirt, grass and oxides from between the fins so they rinse out with water. Acid-type coil cleaners typically have a pH below 2.0 and remove hidden oxidation to brighten the aluminium.

Our product is a concentrated liquid acid formulation, light red in colour with a mild odour, and our MSDS lists phosphoric acid. It removes soiling containing oil-carbon, grease, calcification and layers of oxidation on aluminium, brass, copper, bronze, chrome and high-grade steel. It also cleans radiator fins, oil coolers and heat exchangers. It forms a protective anticorrosion layer on aluminium, and its inhibitors protect iron parts against the acid. Other grades, including RXSOL-41-4131-025, RXSOL-41-4132-025 and RXSOL-16-1086-050, sit alongside it in our radiator and AC coil cleaner range.

Acid or alkaline coil cleaner: which suits your coils

Choose the chemistry by looking at the coil. An acid coil cleaner suits bare aluminium fins on outdoor condensers that are dull with oxide and salt, because it brightens the metal and removes the white deposit khareef leaves behind. Acid cleaners can etch aluminium if left on too long, so contact time matters.

Alkaline coil cleaners are high-foaming products with penetrating agents that emulsify oily grime, with a typical pH of about 13.5. Non-acid cleaners are often recommended for routine maintenance where the soil is mainly grease and dust. Alkaline cleaners can strip paint from painted or coated fins. Before using either type on a blue-fin or epoxy-coated coil, test it on a small area.

Do not use our acid cleaner on aircraft, or on anodised or highly polished aluminium, magnesium, glass or ceramic. Foaming may not occur if the coil is coated or painted.

Dilution, contact time and method

The directions for RXSOL-16-1028-025 are to dilute with 5 to 50 parts of water. Acid coil cleaners as a class typically start at 10 parts water to 1 part product, with 8 to 10 parts water for light cleaning and 3 to 5 parts for difficult jobs. With our product, stay within the 5 to 50 range, so the strongest mix is 1 part to 5 parts water. Always add product to water.

A typical contact time for the class is 5 to 10 minutes. Do not allow the solution to dry on the surface. For parts you can remove, such as oil coolers, use our immersion bath method: mix 1 : 5 with water and immerse the parts for 10 to 60 minutes.

  1. Switch off the unit and its fans and let hot coils cool. In a Salalah summer, work early in the morning so the solution does not dry on hot fins.
  2. Wet the coil with plain water first.
  3. Apply with a low-pressure, acid-resistant all-plastic tank sprayer, from the air outlet side where possible. Work from the bottom up, which avoids streaking.
  4. Rinse the coil, tools and surrounding area thoroughly with fresh water. Rinse each area before starting on the next.

Avoid backspray from wind or high-pressure washers. Rinse with fresh water at low pressure, not with a pressure washer.

Cold stores, fisheries, port and free zone plants in Salalah

Air-cooled condensers at fish processing plants and cold stores run all year close to the sea, so they are usually the first units to show salt damage. Reefer plant rooms and office AC at Salalah port collect salt and dust on their fins. So do site buildings in the Salalah Free Zone.

For coastal Dhofar, a practical schedule is a full acid clean before khareef, gentle fresh-water rinses during the monsoon, and a second full clean once the drizzle stops. In heavy coastal exposure, rinse coils gently with fresh water about 1 to 2 times a month and after storms or strong sea-breeze events. Inspect units within about 0.8 km of the shore monthly. Inspect units 0.8 to 3 km inland that face an onshore wind quarterly.

On indoor evaporators, use only a cleaner approved for indoor coils. An outdoor condenser cleaner used indoors can give off noxious fumes for some time, so use our acid product only on outdoor condensers and heat exchangers.

Hazards, PPE and first aid for acid coil cleaners

Acid coil cleaners are corrosive and may cause burns to any body surface. They are harmful or fatal if swallowed and harmful to the eyes, and their vapours irritate the respiratory tract. Use only where good ventilation and clean flushing water are available. Some acid coil cleaners are based on hydrofluoric acid, and with those, burns may not appear for up to 48 hours. Read the MSDS of any coil cleaner before use, including ours, and keep on site the first aid items it lists, such as calcium gluconate gel for hydrofluoric types.

Wear chemical-impervious gloves, an apron and splash goggles. Do not allow concentrate to come in contact with skin, and avoid contact with eyes and clothing. For eye or skin contact, flush with large amounts of clean water for at least 15 minutes and get medical attention. If your site requires a permit to work on the roof, add the MSDS to your method statement.

Store in a cool place away from food, keep containers upright and tightly closed, and do not reuse empty containers. In a hot Salalah store room, keep the packs out of direct sun.

Acid runoff may harm plants. Keep rinse water away from planted beds and storm drains, and collect it where your site rules require. Our cleaner contains no complexing agents, so your water treatment system can function undisturbed and precipitate heavy metals.

FAQs

Should I use an acid or an alkaline coil cleaner on aluminium fins?

Use an acid cleaner on the bare aluminium fins of outdoor condensers that are oxidised and coated in salt. Use an alkaline or non-acid cleaner for routine cleaning of greasy coils. Test either type on a small area of coated fins first.

What dilution ratio should I use for a condenser coil cleaner?

Dilute RXSOL-16-1028-025 with 5 to 50 parts of water. Use the weaker end for light soiling, and go towards 1 part to 5 parts water only for heavy oxide.

How long should coil cleaner stay on the coil before rinsing?

Typically 5 to 10 minutes. Do not let it dry on the fins, so work on a cool coil early in the morning.

How often should AC coils be cleaned near the sea in Salalah?

Give coils a full clean before and after khareef. In heavy coastal exposure, rinse them gently with fresh water about 1 to 2 times a month and after storms.
