Calcium Hypochlorite Granules Oman: Dosing for Salalah Water Tanks and Pools
Water tanks, resort pools and fish-handling floors in Salalah all need a chlorine source that stays strong in storage, and calcium hypochlorite granules are a dry, high-strength option for that job. We keep our calcium hypochlorite granules Oman stock in Barka and deliver it to Salalah and across Dhofar. Our grade has a minimum available chlorine of 70%. With a 70% product, about 1.4 g per m³ gives 1 mg/L free chlorine, which makes the dose for any tank or pool quick to work out. We pack in 5 Kg, 25 Kg and 45 Kg buckets.
What calcium hypochlorite granules are, and how they differ from calcium chloride
Calcium hypochlorite, Ca(OCl)2 (CAS 7778-54-3), is a white granular solid. It is a strong oxidiser and is highly corrosive. In water it releases free chlorine, which kills bacteria, algae, slime and fungi. Commercial granules come in two grades, 65% and 70% available chlorine. The rest is inert, readily soluble salts, mainly sodium chloride.
Calcium chloride is sometimes confused with this product. It is a different salt, used for drying, dust control and brine. It releases no chlorine and does not disinfect water, so check the product name on your purchase order.
The difference between the 65% and 70% grades is how much chlorine you get per kilogram. With a 70% grade you need less product for the same chlorine level, so you have fewer buckets to store and handle. The table below gives our product record and the typical values for this product class.

Grades for drinking water are made to EN 900, the European standard for calcium hypochlorite used to treat water for human consumption. Check the available chlorine figure of the grade you buy.
Dosing calcium hypochlorite granules: grams per m³
One cubic metre is 1,000 litres, and 1 mg/L is the same as 1 ppm. To work out the dose, use: grams of product = volume in m³ × target ppm ÷ available chlorine as a fraction. Use 0.70 for a 70% grade and 0.65 for a 65% grade.
Typical figures for a 70% product:
- about 1.4 g per m³ gives 1 mg/L free chlorine
- 7 g per m³ gives 5 mg/L
- 14 g per m³ gives 10 mg/L
- 70 g per m³ gives 50 mg/L
Here is a worked example with a 70% grade. To hold a 10 m³ rooftop tank at 2 ppm you need 10 × 2 ÷ 0.70, which is about 29 g. To shock the same tank to 50 ppm after cleaning you need about 700 g. Add the product in proportion, wait about 20 minutes, then test the free chlorine before you add more.
Water tank disinfection for Salalah villas, camps, fish plants and ships
For routine storage, keep a residual of 1 to 2 ppm. Shock chlorination to a residual of 50 to 100 ppm is advised for new tanks, after repair work, or after coliform contamination. The same rules apply to rooftop and underground tanks at villas, labour camps and hotels in Salalah.
Tank cleaning checklist for your maintenance team:
- Drain the tank and remove sludge and sediment.
- Scrub the walls and floor, then rinse.
- Dissolve the granules in a clean plastic bucket of water first. Add the solution while the tank refills, to reach 50 to 100 ppm.
- Hold the water for the contact time in your site procedure.
- Drain the shock water, flush with clean water and refill.
- Test the free chlorine. Bring it down to the routine residual of 1 to 2 ppm before anyone drinks the water.
The same product is used in ship potable water and grey water systems, which suits vessels taking on water at Salalah port. At fish landing sites, fisheries and cold stores it sanitises equipment and handling areas. It is also used for pond disinfection and disease control in aquaculture, and to control algae and slime in cooling water.
Chlorine granules for swimming pool and spa use
For hotel and resort pools, keep free chlorine at 1 to 3 ppm, pH at 7.2 to 7.6 and total alkalinity at 80 to 120 ppm. For a pool shock treatment, superchlorinate to about 10 ppm or more. Wait until chlorine falls back to 1 to 3 ppm before anyone swims. In a 500 m³ pool, raising free chlorine by 10 ppm with a 70% grade takes about 7 kg.
Dissolve the granules in a bucket of water first, then pour the solution around the pool with the pump running. Do not throw dry granules straight into the pool. The solution is strongly alkaline, so regular use pushes pH up, and the calcium raises calcium hardness over time. Test both every week. Correct pH with your usual acid, dosed separately and never from the same bucket. The other water care products you may need are listed in our swimming pool and spa chemicals range.
Storage in Salalah heat and khareef humidity, and safety
Keep the granules dry in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Keep them away from heat, sunlight, open flame and organic matter. Some safety data sheets warn that storage above an average daily temperature of about 35 °C can cause rapid decomposition, chlorine release and enough heat to ignite combustibles nearby. A steel container standing in the Dhofar sun can get hotter than that, so store the product indoors and off the ground.
The khareef season, June to September, brings damp air to Salalah. Moisture causes caking and chlorine loss, so reseal each bucket straight after use. In good storage conditions, the product loses about 2 to 5% of its available chlorine per year.
Mixing it with acids or detergents releases toxic chlorine gas, and mixing it with NaDCC (dichlor) can cause an explosive reaction. Store it apart from trichlor (TCCA) tablets and pH-minus, and use a separate scoop and bucket for each chemical. The typical GHS classification is H272 (may intensify fire; oxidiser), H302 (harmful if swallowed), H314 (causes severe skin burns and eye damage) and H400 (very toxic to aquatic life). EUH031 also applies: contact with acids liberates toxic gas. Wear impervious clothing, rubber gloves, and goggles or a face shield, and make sure there is ample ventilation at the point of use. Avoid breathing in the dust.

Frequently asked questions
How many grams of calcium hypochlorite granules do I need per 1,000 litres of water?
1,000 litres is 1 m³. With a 70% product, about 1.4 g gives 1 mg/L free chlorine, and 70 g gives 50 mg/L for shock disinfection.
Can calcium hypochlorite granules be added straight into a pool?
No. Dissolve the granules in a bucket of water first, then pour the solution around the pool with the pump running.
What is the difference between 65% and 70% calcium hypochlorite?
The percentage is the available chlorine. A 70% grade gives more chlorine per kilogram, so you use less product for the same dose. Put the available chlorine figure of your grade into the dosing formula.
How should calcium hypochlorite be stored in hot, humid weather?
Keep it in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from heat, sunlight, acids and organic matter. Reseal the container after each use. Keep the store below an average of about 35 °C.
Is calcium hypochlorite classed as dangerous goods for shipping?
Yes. Hydrated 65 to 70% grades ship as UN2880, and the dry form is UN1748, class 5.1 oxidiser. Both need dangerous-goods packaging and labelling.
