Heavy Oil Sludge Cleaner for Salalah Port Tanks and Spill Cleanup
Heavy oil sludge in bunker, slop and storage tanks at Salalah port needs an emulsifying cleaner that turns the sludge into a pumpable liquid, and the product we supply for that job is Oil Sludge Cleaner Heavy VOLC, part number RXSOL-20-3300-210. You dose it at 0,2 to 0,4 % in water for recirculation washing, or use it neat by brush or spray on bilges, tank tops, decks and oily spill areas, then wash down with hot water at high pressure. It comes in 20 ltr. and 210 ltr. packing, and we deliver from our Barka warehouse to Salalah and the rest of Dhofar.
Why heavy oil sludge builds up in your tanks
Heavy fuel oil, black oil and other residual oils carry heavy fractions, waxes and some water. Over weeks of storage these settle out as a thick, sticky layer on tank bottoms, heating coils and walls.
That layer reduces the working capacity of the tank, blocks suction lines and strainers, and has to come out before a tank is inspected, repaired or changed to a different product. In Salalah you find the same material in ship bunker and slop tanks, in engine room bilges, in shore tanks at the port, and in fuel and lube oil areas inside free zone plants.
Spills add a second problem. When a hose, flange or pump seal leaks, the oil left behind after recovery forms a tacky film on decks, drip trays, bunds and paved areas that water alone will not lift.
What Oil Sludge Cleaner Heavy VOLC does
VOLC is a mixture of non-ionic and anionic surface active compounds. It is soluble in all hydrocarbons and dispersible with water, so it penetrates the sludge, emulsifies it and lets you flush the loosened residue out with water. It keeps loosened deposits in suspension, which stops them settling again on the surfaces you have just cleaned.
The product is water-based and free from hydrocarbon solvents. It is non-corrosive to ferrous metals and suitable for all tank-coatings, and it can also be used for gas and hydrocarbon freeing of tanks and for deodorising. After cleaning, it helps the slop emulsion separate into oil and water, which gives you a waste stream you can dispose of.
It is suited to heavy oils, black oil and mineral oil products, and the application list also covers phthalates, paraffins, vegetable oils and odour intensive products.
How to use it: dosage and method
Start every job by flushing the system with cold water. This limits evaporation and polymerisation of the residue before the cleaner goes in.
- Recirculation washing for full tanks. The most economical method is direct injection followed by recirculation washing with tank cleaning machines. The necessary concentration in water is only 0,2 to 0,4 %.
- Spraying on stubborn residue. After rough washing, spray VOLC as delivered in drums onto the areas where residue remains. Leave it for 10-45 minutes, and do not allow it to dry. Then butterworth at maximum pressure with warm water at 60°C for at least 3 hours, checking that no foam remains in the final stages. Inspect the tank and, if you have the result you need, finish with a fresh water rinse.
- Local cleaning of engine rooms, bilges and tank tops. Use VOLC neat by brush, spray, immersion, soaking or any other conventional means. Allow a residence time of at least 20-45 minutes where possible for good penetration and emulsification, then wash with hot water and high pressure.
The emulsion residue after cleaning must be allowed to separate in a holding tank for at least 3-5 hours before passing through an oily water separator. Check that your slop tank or holding tank has room for that settling time before you start.
Tank entry is enclosed space work, so follow your permit, gas testing and ventilation procedures, and wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection when handling the concentrate. For detailed information on safety and health, refer to the MSDS, which we send on request.
Using it for oil spill cleanup around Salalah port
For a spill on water or the shoreline, containment and recovery with booms and absorbents come first. Chemical dispersants used on open sea normally need approval from the relevant authority in Oman before use. VOLC is a cleaning emulsifier for tanks, machinery and hard surfaces, and that is where it fits in a spill response.
Once the free oil is recovered, apply VOLC neat to the oily film on decks, pump rooms, drip trays, bunds and paved areas, allow the residence time above, and wash down with hot water at high pressure. Collect the washings in a holding tank so the emulsion can separate before it goes through an oily water separator, and keep them out of storm drains and the harbour.
Where it is used in Salalah and Dhofar
At Salalah port, VOLC suits bunker tank cleaning before repairs, slop tank cleaning, and engine room and bilge degreasing during a port stay. It also cleans machinery parts, bulkheads, decks and bottom plates.
In the Salalah Free Zone and the surrounding industrial area, methanol, ammonia and cement plants run pumps, compressors and fuel or lube oil systems that leave oil and sludge on machinery and floors. The same product cleans those areas, and its deodorising use helps where odour intensive products are handled.
For residues of fish, animal and vegetable oils, such as in fish processing units in Dhofar, also look at Tank Cleaner Sobo RXSOL. It is a biodegradable heavy duty solvent degreaser whose application list includes fish and animal oils, fats and crude palm oil, used by recirculation as a 0.2 to 0.5 % emulsion. If you need a solvent-based emulsifier for furnace carbon and the oil side of fuel and lube oil heat exchangers, Tank Cleaner HD covers that work. You can compare all three on their product pages.

Packing and delivery from Barka
VOLC comes in 20 ltr. and 210 ltr. packing. The 210 ltr. drum suits recirculation washing of large bunker and storage tanks, and the 20 ltr. pack suits engine room, bilge and spot cleaning where you use the product neat.
We dispatch from our Barka warehouse to Salalah port, the Salalah Free Zone and sites across Dhofar. If your vessel's next call is in the north, the same cleaner is also listed for Sohar port deliveries on Sohar Chemical and for Muscat and Barka area orders on Muscat Chemical, so you can split supply between ports.
