Oct 09, 2026Buyers in Salalah and the wider Dhofar region often have a harder time sourcing caustic soda than companies near Muscat. Stock is held far away, prices are rarely published, and the khareef season adds humidity that can spoil badly stored bags. This guide explains how to order caustic soda flakes for Salalah, which documents to ask for, and how to keep the product in good condition through the khareef months.
Who uses caustic soda in Dhofar
Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide, NaOH) is used across Salalah's main industries:
- Dairy, juice and food plants use it for cleaning-in-place (CIP) of tanks, pipes and fillers.
- Water and desalination plants use it to adjust pH and to clean membranes and equipment.
- Port, marine and logistics operators use caustic-based cleaners for tanks, decks and machinery.
- Construction and industrial sites use it in cleaning, degreasing and some chemical processes.
- Small manufacturers use it to make soaps and detergents.
Plan around the khareef
From roughly June to September, the khareef brings mist, drizzle and very high humidity to Salalah. Caustic soda flakes are hygroscopic: they absorb moisture from the air, cake together and slowly lose strength as they react with carbon dioxide. During the khareef it pays to:
- Order closer to use instead of holding months of stock in a damp store.
- Keep bags sealed and on pallets, in a dry, covered area, and reseal opened bags at once.
- Store caustic soda away from acids and away from aluminium, zinc and tin, which it attacks.
- Check the carbonate figure on the certificate of analysis. A low carbonate result (our specification is 2.0% maximum) shows the product was kept dry before it reached you.
Documents to ask for
Most plants in Salalah need these before a new supplier is approved:
- Safety data sheet (SDS): hazards, first aid, spill handling and PPE. Caustic soda is UN 1823, Class 8 (corrosive), Packing Group II.
- Certificate of analysis (COA): purity (minimum 99% NaOH), carbonate, chloride, iron and other limits, with the batch number.
- A formal quotation with your company name and VAT TRN for purchase approval.
All three are available online from Muscat Chemical's caustic soda page: the SDS and a sample COA as downloads, and a PDF quotation generated at the day's price.
Delivery from Barka to Salalah
We hold caustic soda flakes as ready stock in our Barka warehouse and offer next-day delivery across Oman, including Salalah, after the order is confirmed. Flakes come in 25 kg bags, and full pallets carry 40 bags (one tonne). Because the price per kg is lower for larger orders, Dhofar customers often combine requirements from several sites into one delivery.
Ordering works the same way for every region:
- Check the day's price and the rate for your order size.
- Place the order online, or download a quotation if you need internal approval first.
- We call to confirm, then send a proforma invoice for bank transfer.
- The goods are dispatched with the COA for your batch.
Typical strengths for common jobs
Caustic soda is almost always used as a dilute solution. These are common starting points; always follow the instructions of your equipment or membrane supplier:
- CIP in dairy and juice plants: about 0.5 to 2% NaOH, usually hot, followed by a thorough rinse and an acid step where needed. 10 g of flakes per litre of water gives roughly 1%.
- Tank and equipment degreasing: 2 to 5% solutions, often warm, for heavy fats and oils.
- pH correction in water treatment: dosed as a weak solution through a metering pump until the target pH is reached; the amount depends on the water's alkalinity, so start low and measure.
- Laboratory and test solutions: 40 g of NaOH made up to one litre gives a 1 N solution.
Weigh the flakes rather than guessing by volume, and record the batch you used. If the cleaning result changes suddenly, the strength of the solution is the first thing to check.
Checking the delivery
When the truck arrives, check that bags are intact and dry, that each bag carries the corrosive hazard label and UN number, and that the batch number matches the certificate of analysis. Report torn or wet bags with photos within 24 hours. This is especially important during the khareef, when damaged bags take in moisture quickly.
Handling on site
Caustic soda causes severe burns to skin and eyes. Wear splash goggles, gloves and an apron, and keep clean water close by. When making a solution, add flakes slowly to cold water while stirring; never pour water onto flakes, because the heat released can make the mixture boil and spit. If it reaches the eyes, rinse with water for at least 15 minutes and get medical help.
