Properties and Composition
Chemical Formula: H₂SiF₆
Appearance: A colorless to pale, straw-colored liquid
Odor: A sharp, irritating, or pungent odor
Corrosivity: Highly corrosive to metals, glass, and living tissues
Composition in Water: In aqueous solution, it exists as a mixture, with the hexafluorosilicate anion (SiF₆²⁻) being a prominent species.
Notes
Hydrofluosilicic acid is a by-product of the process where phosphoric rock is treated with sulfuric acid to produce fertilizer.
The resulting hydrogen fluoride and silicon tetrafluoride gases are captured and scrubbed with water to form the acid.
